Animal Health and Welfare
Healthy and happy cows are a priority for every dairy farmer. The Australian dairy industry is committed and serious about the health and wellbeing of our cattle. Dairy cattle are closely monitored every day as part of normal farming practice and the industry follows practical, humane and effective measures to ensure our herds remain healthy. Government and industry policies are required to promote the continued improvement and nationally consistent implementation of welfare standards, and protect the sustainability of the dairy industry by enforcing such measures.
Our policy priorities in the Animal Health and Welfare focus area aim to:
- Support the new Australian Animal Welfare Standard and Guidelines for Cattle, which were developed in partnership with animal welfare groups and government, and endorse their uptake on a national scale to ensure that all dairy herds remain healthy.
- Investment in preparedness for Foot and Mouth Disease and emergency disease response capability and surveillance.
- Build the Australian dairy industry’s social license to operate through improved relationships with consumers, customers and the broader community.
